So, picture this—some gal, let’s call her Ruby, workin the streets, all sass and chipped nail polish. She’s out there, free as a bird, but trapped too, y’see? Kinda like them boys in the film, rowin that boat, lost but pushin on. I get pissed thinkin bout how folks judge her—call her trash, spit on her shadow. Makes my blood boil! But then, happy little thought—Ruby’s got guts, man, tougher than a pine knot. Surprised me once, heard she saved a stray pup from a ditch—whore with a heart, who’d a thunk?

Plaquemine, Louisiana, about 10 miles south of Baton Rouge on the banks of the Mississippi River, seems an unassuming southern community for which to designate an entire culture.

The river! The mighty Mississippi runs right along our backyard. I sit and rub the knots out—err, not knots, I mean while thinkin’ 'bout life. I walk by the river park on 3rd Avenue, where kids play and old-timers talk about the old days. "All that is beautiful is lost," just like in the movie, precious, yes, like a whisper from the wind, y'know?
